환향녀와 홍제천의 이야기는 병자호란(1636~1637) 이후 청나라에서 돌아온 조선 여성들(환향녀)이 겪은 치욕과 관련이 깊으며, 당시 사회적 멸시를 피하기 위해 인조가 “홍제천”에서 몸을 씻으면 과거를 묻지 않고 깨끗한 것으로 간주하라는 명을 내리면서 유명해졌습니다. 홍제천은 청나라에서 돌아오는 길목이었기에 환향녀들이 이곳을 지나쳤고, 씻어도 멸시를 피하지 못한 채 홍제천 주변에 정착하며 오늘날의 “홍은동”이 형성되었다고 전해집니다.
병자호란이 한창이던 인조 14년에도 약 50만여 명에 이르는 백성이 청나라로 끌려갔습니다. 청나라로 끌려간 여인들은 대부분 돌아오지 못했지만, 간혹 운 좋게 도망치거나 많은 돈을 주고 풀려난 여인들도 있었습니다. 고국으로 돌아온 여인들은 청나라에서 정절을 잃고 돌아온 환향녀(還鄕女)라 불리며 손가락질을 받았습니다. 양반 가문에서는 환향녀들에게 자결을 강요하거나 이혼을 요구했습니다. 인조는 불쌍한 환향녀들을 생각해 홍제천(弘濟川)에서 몸을 씻은 여인들에게는 정절을 잃은 일을 문제 삼지 말라 명을 내렸습니다.
왜 하필이면 홍제천에서 몸을 씻으라 했을까요? 청나라에서 조선으로 들어오는 길목에 있는 홍제천 연안에는 중국 사신이나 관리가 묵어가던 홍제원(弘濟院)이 있었습니다. 청나라에서 돌아오던 여인들은 바로 귀향하지 못하고 홍제원이 있던 서대문 밖에 머무르곤 했습니다. 인조의 노력에도 환향녀들은 환영받지 못했습니다. 어떤 양반들은 첩을 얻어 고향에 돌아온 부인을 멀리했고, 어떤 양반들은 시부모를 소홀히 대했다거나 하는 온갖 핑계로 이혼하기도 했습니다. 집으로 돌아가지 못한 환향녀들은 홍제천 주변에 터를 잡았고, 그곳은 왕이 베푼 큰 은혜에 감사한다는 뜻으로 홍은동(弘恩洞)이라고 불리게 되었습니다.

The story of the Returning Women and Hongjecheon is deeply connected to the humiliation endured by Joseon women (Returning Women) who came back from Qing China after the Manchu Invasion (1636–1637). It gained fame when King Injo issued an order stating that if they washed themselves in “Hongjecheon”, their past would be forgiven and they would be considered clean, allowing them to escape the social contempt of the time. Hongjecheon was a key route for those returning from Qing China, so the returning women passed through here. Even after washing, they couldn't escape contempt and settled around Hongjecheon, forming what is now “Hongeun-dong”.
During the height of the Byeongja Horan in the 14th year of King Injo's reign, approximately 500,000 people were taken captive to Qing China. Most women taken to Qing China never returned, though some were fortunate enough to escape or were released after paying large sums of money. Women who returned to their homeland were called hwanhyangnyeo (returned women), having lost their chastity in China, and were subject to public scorn. Yangban families often forced these women to commit suicide or demanded divorce. King Injo, pitying the plight of the hwanhyangnyeo, issued an order stating that women who washed themselves in the Hongjecheon Stream should not be held accountable for having lost their chastity.
Why did he specifically order them to wash at Hongjecheon? Along the banks of Hongjecheon, situated on the route from Qing China to Joseon, stood Hongjewon (弘濟院), a guesthouse where Chinese envoys and officials stayed. Women returning from Qing China often couldn't go straight home and instead stayed outside the West Gate (Seodaemun), where Hongjewon was located. Despite King Injo's efforts, the returning women were not welcomed. Some yangban (nobles) distanced themselves from their wives who had returned home after acquiring concubines, while others divorced them using all sorts of excuses, such as neglecting their in-laws. The repatriated women who couldn't return home settled around Hongjecheon Stream. The area came to be called Hongeundong (弘恩洞), meaning ‘Hong's Grace Village,’ expressing gratitude for the great mercy bestowed by the king.

1. 죄인을 참소하는 사탄 – Satan who accuses the sinner.

옳은 말이 아니라 믿음의 말을 하라. - Speak words of faith, not words about facts.
2. 죄악을 제거하시고 아름다운 옷을 입히시는 하나님 - God who removes sin and clothes us in beautiful garments.
