INTRODUCTION: [Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper]
Da Vinci began this painting in 1495 and took a year to complete it. He painted The Last Supper right into a wall of the dining hall at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. He wanted to use the one-point perspective in his painting, important for the achievement of three- dimensional and highly realistic works. This method makes subjects appear smaller the further away they get. Leonardo’s painting gives an illusion and draws the viewer right into it; into the chaos. To achieve this perspective, Leonardo da Vinci used a hammer and nail! The nail went into the wall and the string was tied to it to make guiding marks for the positioning of the other subjects at the perfect angles. Da Vinci designed this piece so that the focal point of the entire painting is Jesus’ face. The perspective is drawn in such a way that all lines in the painting converge on Jesus’ forehead so that Jesus is the focal point, or where the viewer’s eye keeps returning. Jesus is literally the center of the painting. This is no accident. This was the artist’s design and intention. Likewise Jesus is the center of God’s design and plan. A creative illustration of this is found in DaVinci’s Last Supper. This is how God has designed life to be fully enjoyed-with Jesus at the center.
